Bob Nordquist is proud to announce the release of his newest and most personal album yet, “Kettle River”. Recorded solo, live and outdoors on the banks of the Kettle River in Northern Minnesota on a cold, rainy weekend in early May 2007, this album captures the feel of the people, the history and the land so many of us have come to love.
Coming on the heels of the critically acclaimed album “The Animal Within,” by Bob and his band The Intangibles, “Kettle River” is a return to Bob’s musical folk roots as well as his geographical roots. The simple melodies and arrangements put the focus on the stories, which can be touching, funny and dramatic.
Some of the stories are historical. One of the highlights of the album is “Cloquet, MN – 1918,” a song that tells the stories of the survivors and the victims of the great fire of 1918 that swept through much of Eastern Minnesota, destroying several towns and displacing tens of thousands of people.
The album has many great songs. “Weeping Water, Nebraska” is a touching tribute to Bob’s late father. “Missing Harmonies” is a light-hearted love story in a mosquito-infested campsite under a tarp. “When the Trees Fell Down” is a tragic love story during the storm that blew down 25 million trees in the Boundary Waters Canoe Area.
Although this is a solo folk album, The Intangibles are showing their versatility once again, by picking up banjos and washboards and joining in the spirit and fun energy of this album for the release party. Bob Nordquist and The Intangibles will perform a second set, with some of the hits from, “The Animal Within” and Bob’s two previous solo albums, with a sneak preview of some new songs from an upcoming epic 3-disc trilogy, “The Age of Wonder,” which The Intangibles will be heading into the studio to record in 2008.
The night will begin at 7 p.m. with singer/songwriter David Hanners. David is originally from a small town in Illinois, he moved to Texas where, as a journalist, he traveled around the Southwest meeting all kinds of characters, some of whom made it into his songs. In the process, he won a Pulitzer Prize in journalism. He honed his songwriting craft under the influence of a community of musicians that produced such legendary writers as Steve Earle, Guy Clark and Townes Van Zandt. “Nothing Town,” David’s debut album on the Mercy Recordings label, is a brilliant example of his songwriting genius, but it only hints at the vast quantities of truly inspired music in his catalog.
After two sets by Bob Nordquist and The Intangibles, the stage will be turned over to a truly unique band from Minneapolis – Samosa. Samosa is an improvisational jazz fusion group with a strong influence from the Indian subcontinent. With influences ranging from, Miles Davis to Metallica, The Bad Plus, Primus and Ravi Shankar…. Check out their My Space Page for more information and audio clips.
The Acadia Café is at the Corner of Franklin and Nicollet in Minneapolis. They have good food, wine and an amazing collection of beers on tap from around the world. There is a separate room for music, so it is a great listening venue. Music starts at 7:00. Cover $5.
